The AWS Certified Welder (CW) test is administered through AWS Accredited Test Facilities, known as ATFs. These are the only locations where a candidate can sit the official CW test and have the result count as an AWS credential. AWS publishes its own current facility locator, which is the authoritative source for finding a specific ATF near you; we do not reproduce that list here since it changes as facilities are added or removed.
How many ATFs exist, and how many overlap with training programs
AWS's ATF Domestic Site Listing counts over 200 domestic facilities nationally. Cross-referencing that list against our own directory, 126 of the 938 programs in our directory (13.4%) sit in the same city as an AWS ATF.
That co-location is a geographic fact, not a partnership. Attending a welding program does not require using a co-located ATF, and the two are administered separately: a program teaches welding, an ATF administers the CW test, and there is no official arrangement between industrialwelders.com, any listed program, and AWS. Where a program happens to sit in the same city as an ATF, that proximity can make scheduling a test more convenient once training is complete, nothing more.
Why the distinction matters when you're choosing a program
A program's proximity to an ATF is one practical factor worth checking, since it can simplify logistics after training ends, but it should not be the deciding factor on its own. Program quality, cost, and completion outcomes matter more to the training itself. What co-location does and doesn't tell you
A program sitting in the same city as an ATF tells you the two exist in the same metro area. It does not tell you the program has any formal relationship with that ATF, that the ATF gives graduates of that program priority scheduling, or that the program's instructors have any connection to how the ATF administers its tests. Some programs do build informal relationships with a nearby ATF over time, arranging testing logistics for their graduates as a convenience, but that is a program-level choice, not something AWS sets up or requires. Confirm directly with any specific program what, if anything, it arranges around testing, rather than assuming co-location implies coordination.
What to do if there's no ATF in your city
Thirteen percent of the 938 programs in our directory sit in an ATF city, which means most don't. That isn't a barrier: candidates travel to the nearest ATF routinely, since AWS does not require testing in the same city where training happened. Use AWS's own test-facility locator to find the nearest option once you're ready to test, and factor travel distance into your planning the same way you'd factor in the test fee itself, since neither is fixed and both are worth confirming ahead of time.
What the test itself involves
The CW test is a performance test, not a written exam: a candidate welds a test coupon, under the test facility's supervision, using the process, position, and material the certification covers. The finished coupon is then evaluated, visually and in some cases destructively, against AWS's acceptance criteria for that test. There is no separate classroom requirement to sit for it, which is consistent with CW being a performance-only credential rather than a course-based one. What a training program provides beforehand is the practice needed to pass that coupon test on the first attempt, not a required prerequisite step AWS itself mandates.
