Certification codex
AWS D1.1: Structural Welding Code: Steel
D1.1 is the AWS code most commonly referenced by welder-qualification tests for structural fabrication and construction work.
- Issuer American Welding Society (AWS)
- Scope Governs welding of structural steel: joint design, qualification of welding procedures and welders, fabrication, inspection, and workmanship for statically and cyclically loaded structures.
- Who needs it A welder or fabricator working structural steel construction, or a CWI whose Part C code-book exam is built around D1.1.
- Prerequisites D1.1 is a code, not an individual credential. There is no standalone "D1.1 test" for a welder to sit. Employers qualify a welder to D1.1 through their own welding-procedure-qualification process, referencing the code's acceptance criteria; a CWI's Part C exam can also be built around D1.1 as the reference code.
- Test format Not applicable; see prereqs. The code sets the qualification and workmanship requirements an employer's own test must meet.
- Cost The code book itself is sold through the AWS Bookstore; a specific price was not confirmed in this pass and is not stated here to avoid an invented figure.
- Renewal / recertification Not applicable: D1.1 is a code, not an expiring individual credential.
- Where employers ask for it The code most often named outright in structural fabrication and construction job postings, for general steel building, platform, and equipment-support work.

Prep schools with an AWS-accredited test facility (ATF)
Schools that host their own AWS Accredited Test Facility are the closest match this directory has for training and testing for AWS D1.1 in one place, a bridge AWS's own certification pages don't provide.
